En los anos sesenta, la linguista Maria Teresa Fernandez de Miranda emprendio un estudio sobre siete variantes del zapoteco, una familia de lenguas otomangues del estado de Oaxaca, con la finalidad de reconstruir el sistema fonologico del protozapoteco.
