Given the need for systematic research into the prehistory of the southwest region of Andalucia in the south of Spain, a comprehensive research proposal has been designed, based on the concept of initial class societies. This study looks at continuity and change in burial practices and funerary traditions in the Third Intermediate Period, the 21st to 25th Dynasties. Focusing primarily on the royal cemetery of Tanis, Jose Lull studies in detail the architecture of the tombs, how and where the people and pharaohs were buried, chronology of the tombs, the burial traditions and ritual that followed burial, and the texts and iconography that were featured on the walls of the tombs. Results of a regional settlement study which argue that the emergence of highly nucleated early Wankarani villages can be attributed to concentration of highly productive land for a mixed farming-herding economy, defense, and labor pooling. There is little evidence of exotic imported goods, but some indication of small-scale village specialization and economic interdependence.
