Este libro nació como consecuencia de la invitación que el Cabildo de La Gomera cursó al autor para que preparase una exposición en la Torre del Conde relacionada con la cartografía isleña. El libro reproduce 19 mapas de La Gomera. El primer mapa de La Gomera con topónimos es el manuscrito de Valentim Fernandes (1506). Tiene forma de trébol y escaso valor cartográfico. La ‘primera imagen’ con un contorno bastante cercano al real en el levantado por el ingeniero militar Leonardo Torriani (1588). Al que le siguen las Plantas del también ingeniero militar Próspero Casola (1635c) ...

Los sermones que se conservan de Arias Montano enlazan directamente con la renovación en la predicación que significó el Renacimiento, a la sombra de figuras como el general de los agustinos Egidio de Viterbo o el catedrático de la Universidad de Alcalá, fray Dionisio Vázquez. En este trabajo se editan y estudian dichos sermones, situándolos en su contexto espiritual e intelectual.
