Durante largo tiempo la modernidad se ha entendido como un proceso unitario y acumulativo irradiado desde Europa. Este volumen parte del supuesto de que la modernidad no es la etapa final de un proceso gradual y cronológicamente ordenado: en realidad, no hay una modernidad canónica sino múltiples modernidades. Así pues, su propósito es actualizar la autopercepción cultural de las sociedades iberoamericanas y ubicar su evolución en los parámetros que delimitaron la modernidad occidental.
