Para la tradición intelectual y artística colombiana hablar de la obra de Eugenio Barney Cabrera es remitirse a los aportes que en materia de crítica sobre arte precolonial y decimonónico colombiano, desarrolló este investigador caucano; sin embargo, resulta paradójico que el reconocimiento solo sea hacia la obra y no hacia el autor, máxime cuando hacer crítica a la manera de Barney se consolidó como una propuesta de pensamiento para la historia del arte en Colombia.
