En el siglo XVII, Nueva Espana era un territorio muy urbanizado; junto a las grandes capitales provinciales se encontraban medianas y pequenas ciudades en las que se repetian los patrones de vida cotidiana implantados por los espanoles en la ciudad de Mexico. Este volumen estudia tanto los espacios fisicos como los institucionales y corporativos donde se desarrollo la convivencia entre los diversos sectores sociales urbanos, asi como el marco normativo que regulaba sus relaciones.

Hasta el siglo XVI, el Bajio fue una zona fronteriza entre los pueblos civilizados del sur y los grupos cazadores del norte. Finalmente, la cultura mesoamericana se extendio hacia las aridas tierras septentrionales debido a los nuevos asentamientos de agricultores y ganaderos, asi como al descubrimiento de las minas de Zacatecas y Guanajuato que aceleraron el surgimiento de las actuales ciudades, incluida, por supuesto, San Miguel de Allende.
