La democratizaci n de los sistemas pol ticos latinoamericanos est condicionada por una realidad compleja enraizada en la historia y la gran heterogeneidad que caracteriza a sus sociedades. Este libro, producto de un seminario organizado por el Centro de Estudios Sociol gicos, trata de abrir horizontes que desde las ciencias sociales contribuyan a un debate que no puede ser sino colectivo.

A la luz de investigaciones llevadas a cabo durante los dos ultimos decenios, Romano ha extendido el ambito de la discusion para incluir el espacio hispanoamericano. Ha podido verse que la America colonial aprovecho las dificultades de sus metropolis para ofrecer una coyuntura opuesta: si Europa en su conjunto -con las notables excepciones de Inglaterra y los Paises Bajos- pasa por una crisis secular, el continente americano proporciona ciertas senales de liberacion y de desarrollo economico.
